End of the 2013 season

The results of the Championship meet are now posted to the Website
From my desk, it has been a very fast season.  I know that many families are now heading off to vacations; that's what we did 30+ years ago.  Back then, the season ended in August, but school started later, as well.  When we were actively scoring meets, our season ended with SCMAF and the challenge of scoring meets with boys & girls events running simultaneously.

This year, I have been putting more things on Google-ware, hence this Blog.  If I do this next year, look for something that will be easier to pass along to others.

As I look at the rotation of duties, it appears that Shafter will assume the presidency and then ??? as there is no Bakersfield Untied, but there is room for American, BSA and Roadrunner to get into the rotation in addition to some of the smaller clubs.  This would be good to sort out before February, and, perhaps, people will finally lose my phone number ;-)

I must say that I am sad to see the demise of the Desert teams.  I actually enjoyed Ridgecrest at 110 deg F.  At China Lake one year, a 4 year old boy swam backstroke to the middle of the pool, got turned around, and then finished where he started.  Timers ran to the other end to give him times.  Now I wish that I could remember who that was; did he continue with swimming?

Last year at this time, the clubs of the Swim Council presented us with a memento of our years doing meet computer processing for so many of them.  That was in the form of $many and a sizeable plaque.  I have found it hard to get a good photo of the plaque without reflection; however, here is one of our better attempts  -- Thanks, friends.

Owen B. Nelson, r.i.p. June 25, 2013 at age 73

The booming voice of Owen Nelson was already there in 1977 when my boys first started competitive swimming with Aqua Aces.  A year or so later, he became the head coach at Park Stockdale.  For at least 3 decades, his presence at meets was evidenced by his leather-lung encouragement of his swimmers.  His years in the sun led to a problem with skin cancer; however, in my last contact with Owen a few years ago, the cancer seemed under control.  He was then working at branch libraries.  Owen always wanted the best out of everyone and the best for everyone.  His opinions were both strong and fair, sometimes with the agreement to disagree.  In my limited world of scoring swim meets, I found Owen to be a really good person with whom to work.  To his family, I would like to say thanks for sharing him with Kern County swimming; to God, I say thanks for the brief encounter of Owen in our lives.

Sincerely, the Schmidt family: Lee, Dorothy, David, Paul, Peter & Mark

Larsen Jensen Clinic On June 21

Gabe Woodward writes:

This is my first season having a little swim team and we are enjoying everyone in the swim council's graciousness immensely. Thank you!

One of my good friends is Larsen Jensen. Larsen grew up in Shafter and went on to swim in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics winning a medal in each and is now a Navy Seal. He has graciously agreed to do 2 swim clinics this coming Friday, June 21st. Each will be 90 minutes, starting at 3:45 and 5:30pm.

Our pool at BSA is too small to host this, so RBG has graciously allowed us to use their pool. All the teams are invited. The cost is 25$ per child and the parents get to listen for free ;) I think they enjoy these often times as much as the kids. I apologize for the short notice, but were glad to have Larsen as he has just returned from overseas. Attached is a flier if you'd like to send out to your teams. Spacing is somewhat limited as we want to have a quality clinic. Parents must RSVP to our BSA front desk at 615-6530 to reserve a space in one of the clinic times.

We are happy to serve the community through opportunities like this clinic if you all so desire. Let me know even if you or your swim team cant make this one but you think this is something that is good for our teams in the future.
